Falkirk Silverbacks Australian Football Club was established in March 2014 by then Glasgow Sharks player and Falkirk resident, Martin Bell. After a gradually progressive recruitment period, the Silverbacks had their firs hit out on July 12th 2014 running out winners against a Glasgow Sharks reserve side in a 6 a side curtain raiser to the Sharks v Bloods SARFL round 5.
From there the Silverbacks continued to build and by September 2014, were ready to step up to 9 a side format in a home friendly against fellow start up club North Lanarkshire Wolves which Silverbacks won in a close, physical and competitive match. By October 2014, the Silverbacks were well equipped for competition and accepted the challenge of 2 games in 2 weeks against Tyne Tees Tigers and Edinburgh Bloods losing both games narrowly but gaining several plaudits for their performances, with most players only having taken the sport up a few weeks earlier.
In 2015 the Silverbacks will debut in SARFL along with North Lanarkshire Wolves and Greater Glasgow Giants. The Silverbacks have developed faster than anticipated and so will be expecting to be competitive throughout 2015 but regardless of results, Footy being played in Falkirk next season and beyond will be the true measure of the clubs success.
